GD - FAQs

BANKERS ACADEMY, PALAKKAD

Q. What kind of preparations do I have to take before appearing for a GD?
Ans. A few banks have opted for Group Discussion as one of the screening criteria as it helps in choosing the socially suitable candidate among the superior achievers who have qualified the written test.
The first step to your preparation is reading as the more you read, the better you are in your thoughts. Panelists judge candidates on their knowledge about a certain topic candidates should be in good touch with current affairs, the debates, and latest topics of discussion. Reading multiple view points on the same topic will help the candidate to create his/ her view point with rationale. If you forget some facts, use words/liners like approximately, according the experts, based on surveys etc so that it sounds correct. Be clear, objective, and logical in whatever you are presenting. Try to keep it simple and smart. The electronic media also will be of good use here.
Panelists assess candidates on the skills like that of leadership, communication, interpersonal, and persuasive. It tests the candidate's ability to think, their analytical capabilities and their ability to make a strong point in a team-based environment.

Q: Is it necessary to wear formals in a Group Discussion?
Ans. There is a popular belief that your appearance speaks a lot about you. Hence, stick to formals preferably. Girls can wear a decent cotton salwar-kameez or a corporate blazer with trousers and boys can team up trousers with nice blazers. Remember to keep it comfortable so that you can carry it well.

Q. What is the average duration of a GD?
Ans. A lot of banks notifying for IBPS Bank Probationary Officer Recruitment have kept Group Discussion as one of the selection procedure along with personal interviews for the final selection of candidates. A Group Discussion is usually of 15-20 minutes or maximum 30 minutes (depends upon the situation) and is used to gauge the behavioral and attitudinal responses of the participants.

Q. What is the right way to put up question/queries during a GD?
Ans. First of all, listen to others carefully. Try not to interrupt in mid-way and it would be good if you raise your hand or any other decent way like raise your pen or pencil just to make others understand that you want to ask or to say something. You can also voice your opinion by saying "Excuse me, but I feel that what you are saying isn't universally true ..." or "I totally agree with you but I would like to ask or add upon it...", "I would beg to differ".. as polite as you can and  as required.
